The Walled City Music Festival is taking place for the 9th year running, from 31st May – 4th June. The Walled City of Derry is home to many talented musicians of all genres and styles. Following the annual Jazz Festival which took place in April/May, the Walled City Music Festival focuses on the Classical side of things. However, this jam-packed programme also consists of a variety of innovative projects with something for all kinds of music lovers to enjoy. Music is definitely in the bones of the city, so be sure to make the most of this fantastic musical event – you never know what you might hear!
The festival is being opened by the leading Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman, who will be accompanied by Cathal Breslin on the piano. This performance in The Glassworks on 1st June promises to kick the festival off with a vibrant & powerful start.
This years’ Ulster University music graduates are showcasing their talent in a range of diverse performances of varying styles during the festival. There are two showcases on the 2nd June; the first taking place at Christchurch at 1:15pm and another at 7:30pm at The Glassworks. Come along and see the emerging artists of Derry.
The Walled City Music Festival will also premiere Frank Lyons’ new composition. This consists of an amplified string quartet – Benyounes – alongside music from Derry’s own Acoustronic Ensemble. A combination of acoustic & amplified instruments with new technology, guarantees a compelling & surprising experience. One to watch on June 2nd!
The festival continues on the 3rd June at The Glassworks, with a generation of Derry’s finest musicians in concert. Cathal Breslin, Sabrina Hu, Ioana Petcu-Colan, Ruth McGinley, Gerard McChrystal, Kim Vaughan and the Benyounes Quartet will present an encore-style evening with their range of instruments.
The festival will welcome back Measha Brueggergosman, Cathal Breslin & the wonderful Ulster Orchestra to hold the closing concert at the Millenium Forum. This spectacular event promises to be a highlight of Derry’s 2017 musical calendar. So it’s definitely an event not to miss!
